With no marketing dollars in your pocket, the right knowledge about Search Engine Optimization is the currency you are going to spend. We would recommend you read some of the best SEO blogs that include Search Engine Journal and Ahref Blog. While you will learn that the best SEO strategy fit for your business is a learned experience, here is the easiestguide to follow.

Do keyword research

Most SEO strategies begin with keyword research. Simply put, keyword research is the starting point of your SEO strategy that involves finding the most searched words or phrases that your target customers use. Once you can find these words and phrases, you can start creating web pages to rank.

The keyword research process includes these steps:

  1. Find a few bunch seed keywords
  2. Use a keyword research tool to generate more ideas
  3. Evaluate and prioritize keywords

Seed keywords are your foundation words that further build your keyword research. For instance, if you sell mobile chargers, your seed keywords will be like:

  • Portable phone charger
  • Fast charger
  • Phone charger

How do you get these keywords?

You use Google’s Keyword Planner, which is a free tool.

Now, you have seed keywords but they alone are not much use as they are broad. The next step is to enter these keywords into a premium search tool like Ahref and find more targeted keywords.

Here is what we got when we tried to refine these seed keywords with Ahref:

Now you have some solid keywords to work with, still, you are not done yet. You need to prioritize these keywords based on “Search Volume (the overall search demand for a keyword)” and “Keyword Difficulty (the ranking difficulty of a keyword).”

Create optimized pages

Once your list of keywords to target is ready, the next step is to create pages that can rank for these keywords.

Most people think optimizing a webpage with keywords is all about the number of times you mention the keyword. That might have been the case decades ago, today all Google cares about is how well matched is the content to users’ intent.

Want proof?

We searched for “best breakdance songs” in Google and this page ranked at the top:

Can you guess how many times this page has used “best breakdance songs” in content?

Zero.

Yet, Google still understood the relevance and ranked it at the top.

If you want to rank in Google, create content that matches searchers’ intent. It’s not hard, just look at the top 10 results for a keyword and what their content is all about. Keep the content simple to read, garnish it with irresistible title tags and meta descriptions, and at last use descriptive URLs.

Finalize with the last push

You have awesome content ready but you will need some extra push to finally get it gliding to the top. This is why you need to build some links as they are included in Google’s top 3 ranking factors. While there are plenty of ways to build backlinks, for starters, we only want you to focus on two-community site link building and replicating your competitors’ backlinks.

This is the most simplistic fundamental SEO guide to get started on your own. Once revenue starts coming in, you can take SEO to the pro-level by hiring a professional or an agency.
